Good metal groups

I want some names of good metal groups that aren't so mainstream that people make fun of them, but not so underground that people who listen to it feel superior. For examples on what I like, see below

Anathema (Serenades, Helm, don['t flip out on me)
Children of Bodom

Any other names to add to that list would be appreciated. :)

N00bKill3R Mar 18th, 2005 01:53 AM

Mastodon, Himsa, Folly
Those are my three metal bands :rock

Therion, if you don't already listen to it, which you should >:
I don't understand why more people don't listen to Therion, everything they've done is so unbelievably awesome. Even if they are a pretty popular metal band, there's no reason I can see that they shouldn't be way more popular :( They're also on tour right now, so go get tickets you cvnts.
Fates Warning, especially the power metal albums
Suffocation, all the albums are awesome, but Human Waste stands out for me, especially the track Infecting the Crypts, which is, in my opinion, the best death metal song ever.
Cathedral can be kind of repetitive I find, but they have a lot of cool heavy sounding doom metal songs with lots of pretty melody :D
In the Woods... is good, listen to it.
Windir's pretty good too, Arntor Likferd and 1184 were good albums. To me it seems like a mix of black metal and power metal, which is kind of cheesy at first, but it'll grow on you.
Enslaved is great epic metal, Vikninglir Veldi was a spiffy album. But I'm sure there are other people who know a lot more about epic metal then me ;(
Also, Thyrfing is a pretty good viking metal band, Urkaft and Vannisevisor are solid albums, not too extreme in any way, but interesting.

Strapping Young Lad
"City" and "SYL" are both great. The upcoming "Alien" sounds promising too.

Soilwork
"Natural Born Chaos" is propably the best album, but "Figure Number Five" isnt bad either. Catchy songs.

Ensiferum
They only have two albums, but they are both awesome. They are a blend of different metal genres, but its mostly viking/death metal.

I'll give you stuff that will be easy to find:

Helloween - Walls of Jericho for good power metal

Omen - Battlecry, ditto

Hammers of Misfortune - The August Engine

now some death metal

Autopsy - Mental Funeral

Dusk - Morning Ressurect (also doomy)

and here's some progressive metal:

Heir Apparent - Graceful Inheritance

Psychotic Waltz - A Social Grace

nobody will be able to make fun of these choices (although I don't see why you'd care about that, but then again, you asked so I took it into account.) 'cause these are either pretty obscure, or proven classics.

Immortal Goat Mar 18th, 2005 01:08 PM

It isn't that I care about being made fun of. It is just that if I am going to be listening to music, I want respectable stuff. Not like bad rip-offs of other bands that I have never heard of.

Grim Reaper, Frenzy, Lord Wierd Slough Feg, Raven, Saxon, Hell, Dragonslayer, Hammerwhore, Fugitive, Running Wild, Piledriver, Accept, Anvil, Gehennah, Fist, Manowar (that should be obvious), Chateaux, Angel Witch, Wild Dogs, Sapphire, Black Death, Breaker, Destructor, Rubycon, Warfare, Legend, Desolation Angels, Warlord, Reverend Bizarre, Mirror of Deception, Forsaken, Count Raven, Candlemass, Soldier, Rottweiler, Goat Horn, Hellhammer, Cirith Ungol, Blacklist, Aragorn, Paralex. Psychotic Waltz is incredible! If you wanna check out some different stuff here's a link, it's not the best quality but you can get an idea of what it is and look for it elsewhere- http://vibrationsofdoom.com/test/
I still go there and listen to random stuff. I love it.

Dixie Mar 18th, 2005 03:49 PM

Some of it may be too undergound but if you like it who cares?
Bulldozer, Blood Money, Penance, Orodruin. I can't help it.

fungusamongus Mar 18th, 2005 04:18 PM

Nevermind the other bands I had posted, just get everything from Anacrusis

Methuselah Mar 18th, 2005 05:38 PM

I've always liked Type O Negative and Tiamat...but that's just me.

EverythingWillSuck Mar 18th, 2005 06:13 PM

Norther - sound almost like CoB it's unfunny.
Daylight Dies - same in the melodic style as anathema
Katatonia - see above
Finntroll :meat

Bobo Adobo Mar 18th, 2005 09:11 PM

Helm Mar 18th, 2005 10:56 PM

AChimp Mar 18th, 2005 11:16 PM

Does Gamma Ray count as mainstream? Because I don't care. >:

Dixie Mar 18th, 2005 11:25 PM

Favorite Ramma Gay song ever- Free Time
Sure they count, they may be goofy but they're fun.

Dixie Mar 18th, 2005 11:31 PM

Helm, you are totally that Greek word for "angel".

Helm Mar 18th, 2005 11:43 PM

which is heh, angelos

gamma ray used to ge good on the first few albums, but from somewhere out in space and forth they're total crap.

Dixie Mar 18th, 2005 11:50 PM

Like I knew that. I'm a lazy American. At least Gamma Ray are entertaining. Better than Dream Evil anyday, woof.

AChimp Mar 19th, 2005 12:04 AM

I like all of Gamma Ray's stuff.

I use metal to help with programming (it has mind powers :eek ). All metal is good, but power metal gives you skillz. Scrolling through my playlist, I have stuff like Dio, Avantasia, Dark Moor, Freedom Call, Manowar, Rhapsody and Stratovarius.

Dixie Mar 19th, 2005 12:12 AM

Don't try to out-gay me Chimp. I know what you're doing. You'll eat my dust.

Alot of that is very embarassing though. Also Rhapsody. You should never listen to rhapsody anywhere in public.

AChimp Mar 19th, 2005 06:54 PM

I said I don't care. >:
