There's no such thing as the new york style of death metal, unless you're thinking deathcore.
Floridian death metal usually is all about blast beats, technical riffs, atonal solos a la slayer and deep guttural vocals. Check out:
Nocturnus : The Key
Massacre: From Beyond
Death: Human
Deicide: Deicide
Malevolent Creation : Retribution
Old style Swedish death metal was more punk-like based on agression and filth, but with an undercurrent of minor melody. Check out:
the Grave, Entombed and Dismember debut. With fear I kiss the burning darkness by At The Gates. Astral Sleep by Tiamat.
New Wave of Swedish Death Metal is basically an offspring of At The Gates. It focuses on the more melodic minor side of the original deal, along with the screeched vocal school found by Tomas Lindberg from At The Gates. Most bands of this style suck horribly. Like In Flames. Never listen to In Flames. Never like In Flames. Never speak of In Flames. But do check out:
Dark Tranquillity: The Gallery, Enter Suicidal Angels EP, Skydancer
Soilwork debut
Gardenian debut
Shit I don't know any other good NWOSDM bands.
To be nu metal, you must simply copy Faith No More shamelessly, and do it with not an inch of musicwriting ability, not humour. Optionally you need to constantly whine and claim you're from a broken home where your father raped you for the milk regardless from if this is true or not. Oh and you have to think Pantera are a good band. It's pronounced: "C-r-a-p".
Any more questions?
