They were being "rude" to the Vulcans because the Vulcans have been treating humans like immature babies and preventing them from flying around in their ships. There's about 50 years' worth of resentment on the part of Earth now because the Vulcan's have kept saying, "Yeah, as soon as you do this, you'll be ready for the terrible secret of space" but they keep changing their minds.
