To my knowledge, there isn't a way to brand yourself and have more than a scar. You did mention needles so maybe it's something new I haven't paid attention to...

But it's been my experience (and remember, I do this for a living, so it's almost guaranteed I'll see at least one branded customer a week) that branding only = scars. I've seen people with shapes and ugly pictures branded on them, but it's just artistically arranged scar tissue.

And I can guarantee that branding would hurt a LOT worse than tattoo needles.
