I think the only way you'll not have to pay for an online Matrix game is if you allow yourself to be plugged in, therefore allowing the machines to slowly yet surely take over humanity. You really think it was some bigass war?
Er... online games=paying for it. That's how it works, and how it will work until something else comes along that can net the industry more money.
