It might lie in "expectation."
Could it be that it might be expected on the 14th of February while on any other day, other than birthdays it is a surprise. I think it's pretty screwed up, myself. Any guy that got anything from me on Valentine's Day was surprised.
I think most guys don't carry the expectations that some ladies have.
