Valentine's day actually came from a man named St Valentine. In the mid of the first century, St. Valentine was put in jail by Emperor Claudius for refusing to denounce his Christian faith. During his stay he befriended the jailer's daughter and they become very fond of eachother. The actual day, Febuary 14th, was the date he was put to death. But before he was, he left a loveletter to the Jailer's daughter which was signed "from your Valentine."

All in all, this may be evidance that a man would rather die than give his love something better than a cheap card.
