Just a memorized rythum line that's played multiple times over a verse or by itself. It can be chords or single-string. When someone says "Dude, I just learned this new riff!" or "Hey, that riff kicks ass!" they mean something rythum-wise.
Just so you know, a lead is a short one-shot line (or riff, but it doesn't really fit the definition) that's either remembered or made up off the top of your head (improv) that can be used to fill space, make transitions, or a bunch combined for a solo. This is the aspect of playing most people have problems with. I've been playing 2 years and I just barely have a vauge grasp on soloing, and I'd have beer cans thrown at me if I tried to solo at a open mic night. Back to practice...
