There is an alternative to the oppresive Church against which Ernesto Guevara (and apparently Paul Berman) rebelled. If Berman is so concerned about freedom he may want to read "A Theology of Liberation," by Gustavo Gutierrez. Being Catholic doesn't necessarily mean slavish devotion to whatever capatalist powers that may be.
