The HL2 textures are sharper than Doom3s imo but doom has more advanced lighting and shadows.
You also need to rember that HL2 has alot of large outdoor areas which would not work well on a doom3 like engine. Also the physics engine in HL2 (havoc 2) is more advanced than dooms which should count for alot when it comes to vehicles and objects.
