Have you tried changing your settings to the minimum resolution and refresh rate (800x600 and 60 or 66Hz, I think) while in safe mode then restarting?
Also, make sure your driver file is 77.72_win2kxp_english_whql.exe not 77.72_winxp64_english.exe.
