It's mostly just a club thing - fencers as a whole don't smoke a lot.
Fencing is also predominantly anaerobic, so the cardiovascular system is secondary. Smoking, to my knowledge, does not decrease strength - I'm one of the strongest fencers around anyway (except for Big Rob, who is going to be making a pro-boxing debut sometime soon).
In any case, my coach actually advised me against smoking once a week b/c our personalities are somewhat similar and he thinks he knows how it would end up. Odds are cigs are just gonna be a rare occasion for me.
