I think you guys are both dead on, but you're slightly missing the point of the article (and that's perhaps my own fault for giving the thread such a title).

The article actually points out how the Left is often divided on this matter, and yes, often irresponsible.

I was at the march here in DC (more so to see friends, but i digress), and I saw the ridiculous banners, chants, and slogans that were going on. The Left often does this, but the reason it shows such poor tact now is that they might actually be able to accomplish something, were hey to get their heads out of their asses.

I've been in a march, and grinned and beared as some Arabic-looking guys wave Palestinian flags and shout "long live the intifada!" This was a peace march. This wasn't cool with many people, but who are we, the white, middle-class college kids to lecture the "oppressed" on what they should believe or say, right?

That position was ignorant, which is why I felt a great deal of unease at this most recent march, and had a couple near confrontations over what i thought were things that stepped over the line. It wasn't an anti-war march, it wasn't a "peace" march, it was a Bush feeding frenzy. It was a chance for every college kid, aging hippie, and black bloc Anarchist to go out and bitch. There was no solid message, and like the article said, THEY RUSHED SHEEHAN TO GET TO SOME FRINGE SPEECH...!?

Forget ANSWER being irresponsible and racist, or whatever. On top of that, they're fucking stupid, and any movement that lets those folks coordinate the message is doomed for failure.
