My brother just came back from spending a couple of months in London. Although he's from Canada, most people there just assumed he was American and if anything, it was a novelty - they loved his 'accent'. He mentioned hearing the occasional Bush-bashing, but nothing you wouldn't hear anywhere else (especially in the US).
Also, my good friend from LA spent the summer travelling through Europe with her fiance... and *gasp* they're both American AND Jewish. They spent considerable time in London and throughout the UK and spoke nothing of such anti-Semitic/anti-American attitudes.
I really doubt the behaviour described by these people the author allegedly encountered is the norm in Europe. Considering the fact that most of these people he describes were either friends or colleagues of his, I think he should consider changing social circles.
