BitTorrent clients create the files before they start putting data into them. When downloading a file, it can get any part of the file and doesn't necessarily receive it in order from beginning to end. As a result, files will be full of shit and unusable until they are complete.

In your case, though, the torrent hasn't started downloading anything. I'd check to make sure that you're forwarding the right ports to your machine or find a different torrent, because that one is dead.
