If your temperatures are completly wrong even in the bios you most probably need a bios update. Incidentally have you tried flashing your motherboard with the latest bios? (You'll have to find a floppy drive)
A good tool to use to overclock your videocard is ATI tool as it has a built in artifact scanner. Although usually you'll only start top see artifacts after about 5-10 minuits of gaming.
