Perhaps due to the game's age it attempts to count your free HDD space but because hard drives are 100s of times larger than they where during the game's development it encounters an overflow and an error handler outputs a default message of "hard drive full".

Purely speculation but it sounds feasable I guess.

With alot of these older games people have released patches which give them XP compatibility.
