When I was stationed at Fort Bragg, we deployed down to Haiti for a couple of months to put Aristide back into power and stabalize things. The people were pretty nice and inviting ... especially if you, at least, attempted to speak french with them. Anyway, after we were there a bit, the roadside stands to sell to soldiers started popping up everywhere. The big sale items were cigars, wooden sculptures (african influenced and really rather good), and voodoo religious items. I bought a ton of cigars for me and friends back home, a carved wooden elephant, and a good luck "gri gri" (pouch worn around the neck).
