heh, different ranking system.
E stands for Enlisted.
Most people go in as E-1, which is your basic private, with standard pay. If you have a higher education, you get Stripes for Skills. So I get bumped past E-2 and into the paygrade of E-3.
I believe a typical Sergent level is E-5 in the army. Not sure what it is in the Coast Guard.
Officers are O, and GS is General Service, which is working for the government. My father is a GS-12. its about the same level as a Colonel I believe, but being none military, he doesn't get the perks.
