While I don't think it qualifies as a Darwin award, it DOES count as a case of natural selection. After all, if he was a superior specimen, he wouldn't have panicked and ran blindly into a dangerous situation.

I thought Darwin awards WERE natural selection. Otherwise it's suicide which is an act that is totally anti-darwinian.
