Robespierre took what was largely considered a clusterfuck of politics, brought order at a high price that was bloody and ultimately worse than the previous stasis, and in something of a moment of clarity was executed by his own people under strong pressure from foreign States. If you're looking for a Distant Mirror you're not going to find one, but I find the parallels pretty strong.
