Ok, this takes a little bit of explaining:

There is this subculture full of idiots who believe Smash Brothers is meant to be played on even arenas without items or "cheap" characters, and they all practice playing Melee hours and hours a day so they can compete in tournaments with other people like them to win money and circle jerk. In these tournaments, they play only on Final Destination so there will be no random elements present (which is half the fun) and usually only play Fox or Marth, because the other characters are unfair to use. They also rely heavily on wavedashing and L-Canceling. /v/ refers to them as Tourneyfags. Smashboards is full of these bastards, and while normally I and most other people wouldn't give a crap, they seem to love boasting their superiority around the internet to anyone they can and are horribly annoying.

The "REAL MEN USE ITEMS" message in the update was basically Sakurai telling them to eat his dick, which is why I like it.
