Even I don't know the meaning. I think I tried to make it be that he initially tried to make himself believe that he is a good person, but quickly came to the realization he's a horrible person.

But I'm sure it's open to interpretation, especially since I don't even know what the overall meaning ended up being, or what I wanted in the first place.
