EQ has been around for too long, and is quickly becoming outdated. Your best bet might be to hold out for one of the newer ones that might interest you, like Final Fantasy XI or World of Warcraft.
Or EverQuest 2.
The only reason any game such as these might become hopelessly addicting, is because they're pay-to-play games, so you want to get your money's worth. But other than that, I really don't see what's so baby-killing obsessive about EverQuest, or other games like it.
