"Paper" was also scarce, as they had to use expensive sheep and cattle skins to write on and stuff. (remember books had to be hand copied too, which could take months or years...) But besides all this, I wouldn't be surprised if there was historical evidence of his miracles. Hell, there was a miracle witnessed by thousands of people a decade or two ago, and most people don't even believe that.
