Producer Sid Sheinberg wanted it to have this big happy Hollywood ending where everything turns out okay and literally butchered the film (it's painfully obvious where stuff was spliced together toward the end of the film) in order to get it. The original ending was much darker, and Terry Gilliam was furious with the changes and didn't want to be associated with the new version at all.
