Definitely personal opinion plays in.
For example, my family and I went to see "Tales of Desperaux" over the Christmas break. All the kids there seemed to enjoy it very much. My family and I thought that it didn't make sense in some parts (like the vegetable chef) and that it seemed a bit scary for a child towards the end.
