This is true. Jhonen Vasquez himself has said that the series wasn't made for the stereotypical "goth" persona of "depressed teenager wearing black and writing horrible poetry about how much life sucks", it was made to MAKE FUN of that type of person. Yet his audience, thanks in no small part to Hot Topic and its ilk, IS mostly made of of those types. Ah, irony.
