they are able to calculate the distortion and consider that. For example they know that its gonna pass through mars' atmosphere then our atmosphere and they know what effect it will have.
actually if i remember right passing through mars atmosphere then passing through our atmosphere returns it to its original state. But maybe I'm thinking of something else
