I'm not sure what you're saying about the roast here, because I don't think you
can say anything bad about him based on that clip. It was goofy and soft on purpose, and came out hilarious on the other side. It was a concept that worked and I don't think it had much to do with holding back, I think he just (rightfully) thought that roasts are terrible.
My favourite part was John Stamos' awkward reaction shot.
