Strange internet problem

I have been having this strange problem with my internet connection.

It will suddenly stop working, but that's not the strange part. Any connection I have already established will continue to work, but any new connections I try to make will fail.

For instance, I will be on AIM and suddenly I won't be able to visit any websites or log on to any online games... but my AIM connection continues uninterrupted.

I can't seem to figure out what the problem is. Once I restart it goes away again for awhile. Has anyone had this problem or might have a clue what's going on?

I connect to the internet through a router.
