Roguelikes thread

A.D.O.M, Angband and the million variants, Alphaman, Ragnarok, Crawl, Nethack, you name it.

Post your impressions on those games here. I'd also like to know what your favourites are, and why do you think they're better than the rest of them.

For me, it's A.D.O.M. I dig the wilderness and the quest-based system. It's tough but not unfair and while the permakill can get really frustrating, if you play it smart, you just might finish it and gloat to all the other rogulike geeks. It's pretty deep, rumoured to be the most detailed after Nethack.

Personally I have a taste for Ragnarok and Alphaman, but I have tried them all and gotten a kick out of it.

Ragnarok I feel is very fun but horribly imbalanced, though the fun is mostly due to the setting. Also I like to think of it as being one of the easiest on the eyes, and a great introduction to the style.

Alphaman I felt was downright cute with the mutations, just like a mini-lottery, and the color scheme seemed to fit perfectly.

I still play Rogue from time to time, mostly because I keep getting my ass handed back to me in short order.

The main reason I got into these games is because any computer could put out enough power to run them, along with the file size being tolerable even on the lowest baud modem.

For those jerks that haven't tried them yet, go to the ROGUELike HomePage to get a start. I'm not really 100% on the status of these programs, in reference to them being the latest, but if you need more than the name of the program, fuck off.

Alphaman is a bit wacky. Moria is very good. Rogue hurts, as you said, but I too get reaquainted with the controls for a few plays once in a while. How about ZAngband? Nice setting, lots of Tolkien stuff.


Oh, I can't seem to find a place to get the newest version of Ragnarok before it goes Ragnarok on-line. Would you know where I could?

The only Ragnarok Online I know of is that one in development by a Korean company, and I don't think there's any relation to the ROGUElike, though I have been out of the loop for a while in concern with ROGUElikes. Personally when I first heard that there would be a Ragnarok Online, the first thing that came to mind was the fucking ROGUElike, not some fruity anime-styled MMORPG.

As for the latest version, well, the author of the game has a page with 2.5, so I'm guessing any later versions aren't going to be easy to locate as they're probably niche personal projects.

After a bit of searching, the only thing I've really found for the actual ROGUElike Ragnarok is a European release called Valhalla that comes with sound effects and music, though I haven't tried it myself.

There's been some confusion as to what Ragnarok online has to do with the roguelike. I've seen some pretty clean pixel-work, but haven't played.

Hey, guys, you really ought to give these games a shot! I know they don't have the best looks or the in-your-face attitude you kids crave, but they've got one thing going for them that knocks the blocks out of all the other games out there today: Variety! Anybody can play them, come on and give them a try, I dare you!

I will be the first to admit that, even with all of my computer experience, I've never played one of these games.

I got addicted to Zork at an early age and that took up all of my time.

the first one i ever played was a graphical one on a mac and it was called "dungeon of doom" and man did i waste a lot of time in school playing it! there was a terrible PC parody of it called "dungeon of pun" that I also had that had a bunch of bad digitized sounds (most of which were probably from tv shows or movies) that i have not been able to find a copy of
