I don't think the "goth" guy was ever the "designated badass". The way I see it, in the early 90's it was the kurt cobain wannabe type and later in the 90's it was the stoner/punk type which was just a lame version of their predecessor.

For the record, the 80's punks were the best. Return of the living dead
