I definitely agree about the pervasiveness of dodgy bands these days, but I think that's mainly a result of marketing. Every time a new band comes along, there's some hipster blogger who insists they're the greatest band since [insert name of last band written about by hipster blogger]. Suddenly they're the hottest new band of the year and their records sell like crazy. The labels realize this and push their acts on myspace, forums, etc. On the upside, plenty of worthy acts get exposure they might not have had otherwise (M.I.A., Editors, Santogold). On the other hand, how many people are still into Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand? It doesn't even matter, because the hipster bloggers have already moved on to something else. That's why there are very few artists out there who will have careers lasting a lifetime. We will never see another Prince, Madonna or U2. That kind of stuff doesn't exist anymore.
