The Soul, Eternal Life, et cetera
In my readings of Augustine and Aquinas, I've done a lot of rumination and come to the basic conclusion that in spite of purposeful order in the universe, humans do not possess souls. Obviously this puts me in estrangement with my Catholic credo. To boot, I'm about finished reading Owen Flannagan's The Problem of the Soul, which brutally pushes a pro-determinism, agnostic prospective. I'm in agreement with about 85% of his views, and I think he painted a lovely portrait of how stupid modern belief in free will is.
The principle reason I don't believe in the soul is that an afterlife seems impossible to me, so its left with no real purpose if sentience can be explained by science.
Any thoughts?
