question for all yall pothead folks

my friend Del, whom is a jamaican, came over my house one day. i noticed he was acting very strange. he went into my yard and planted something in one of the pots and told me to water it every day. so i did it foolishly and wouldn't you know it, it's good ol marijuana.

i don't want to destroy it though. neither do i want to smoke it. i kinda want to just grow it for fun. how do you grow these kind of things? do they need a lot of sun or water? and just out of curiousity, how can you tell if it's good weed? i heard that if it has flowers it's no good and i should just throw it away.
