My grandparents grew up during the Great Depression. My mom tells me horror stories like how Grandma once put leftover Cherrios from breakfast into a casserole.

I don't understand how growing up in the post WWII era would make you thrifty though. That was the post-war boom, and Americans were becoming more consumerist.
