the substitute
substitute teacher, that is. after a year and a half of not teaching (i did a six-year stint as a high school english and journalism educator), i'm back in the classroom. as a sub. fun fun.
the regular teacher's out 'cause her husband's got cancer (in his sinus, which i've never heard of), and they needed an experienced someone to take over long-term. enter moi.
i've got three 11th-grade and two 12th-grade classes, american and british lit., respectively. the 11th-graders are reading miller's "the crucible," and the 12th-graders are working on chaucer. yay. and the kids are pretty good. 6th period's got a couple of extra-mouthy girls in it, but overall, they've given me minimal problems.
i started thursday and it should last about three weeks, maybe more. one of the best parts is that the teacher i'm subbing for is continuing to plan and grade. plus, she has her planning 5th period, which coincides with lunch, which gives me an hour and a half or so to do whatever i want!
i remember getting over on the subs when i was in school. my poor students! i know they feel cheated that they didn't get some unsuspecting inexperienced sub. they actually have to do work! and they can't just take off to the bathroom every day! and i give them actual tardies! oh, the injustice of it all!
