I beat the game!

I think I may have judged it a little harshly. The game is difficult (note I didn't say challenging; it's difficult in that 'pain in the ass' sort of way) but if you're the kind of person who can look past shitty gameplay and subpar graphics to the genuinely interesting story beneath, then this game at least deserves a rental, if you can find a place to rent it out. There's apparently a lot more to the game after you beat it, so maybe I'll get a more satisfying experience out of the game if I play it again.
