A niece of mine went through a bad divorce - she and her ex-husband have a young son, and while she was out working and he was "housekeeping", he started a relationship with a woman living in their town over the Internet. Not only that, but after he left her he barely made an effort to see his son.

She's with a new guy now and things are looking up, but before that, in conversations about her situation, she's sometimes joke about some of the shit he pulled and got himself into, and I found that just painful. She always sounded bitter. I'm getting the same idea about the woman in this story, who still likes to tell the tale of her husband even though that's in the past now.

As for why it seems the ultimate humiliation for a guy to lose his girl to a girl, I think the basis lies in that men hate to lose to women. It's not pretty and it's not progressive but there's still little more demeaning to a guy than getting your lights put out by a chick.
