Hey Jeanie
Around three this morning, I was outside smoking muh pipe when I heard some of the chickens making crazy noises. It digressed until the chicken was making noises as if it were near death, which was not the most pleasant thing to hear in a pitch black night. I walked about thirty yards from my house, through the orchard, to the chicken pen when this was going on, and at last I yelled at whatever it was and the noises immediately ceased. As I got close I heard a little scampering, and I expected to see a racoon. I turned on a barn light, and instead I saw the dark outline of a huge-ass cat about two feet up a tree. It looked at me for a minute, then descended and scaled the pen fence, then climbed down the fence upside-down.
I'm pretty sure that it wasn't felis domesticus, because I know that none of the cats I've ever owned had the body strength to maneuver like that. Considering that I live in central Indiana, what do you think it was? I'm guessing it was a bobcat, which are rare around here. I've also heard that lynx live around here, but that seems a bit unlikely to me.
