They've done studies in which placebos were proven more effective than anti-depressants. When patients were told they were taking sugar pills, they again lapsed into depression.
Depression has something to do with serotonin. Imbalances can cause severe depression, suicidal tendencies, and the medication balances that. I've known a few people that are taking them and they seem to help a bit. They haven't told me any side-effects, but they appear to be doing better than before...
