Why did this happen?

Max, if you are saying that maybe the soldiers were tired, scared or shell shocked or whatever - why did the shooting last 30 mins? That's a long time. Assuming that "at least 30 mins" was the real time.

I do believe, however, that the 'brass' probably had nothinig to do with it. I don't think it was a planned murder or anything.
