Actually, the reason it's overpriced is because Criterion is releasing it. They're a company who likes remastering and really doing some excellent work on old black and white films as in restoring them, making sure they have the complete print, as well as just including all these kinds of fantastic extras.

Sadly, because they're a small company, they have to charge a fairly high price for their discs to cover the remastering and restoration costs. But on the good side, nowadays they're cutting the costs by releasing newer movies 'worthy' of their esteem. Fear and Loathing is one of these but granted, it will get the Criterion treatment. Another example is the out-of-print Robocop which is truly uncut and from the cuts I've seen, a wonder to behold.
