All merits of the case aside, the media decision that it is a complete non-story is indeed proof of the media's sorry condition.
There are proofs every day. The media is entertainment driven, almost totally in the pocket of vast corporate owners and beyond all else, bone lazy.
A vigorous free press is absolutely necessary for a democracy. What galls me most is how easily it's beenn corupted and with how little effort. There's no vast conspiracy here. Perhaps several small ones, but they only account for a small portion of the general uniformed state of the nation. The press and the people have held hands in a vast, collective, puppy like rolling over. We lie on our backs, waiting for our bellies to be scratched, peeing ourselves in subjigation.
