They are called "Carpet Bags," the name coming from the depression when many business men lost everything on the market and had nowhere to go. So they would gather all of their few possesions they could carry and wrap them up in their carpet then hang it on a sturdy rod to hang over the shoulder for easy carrying. These men were not called Hobos however, they were called "Carpet Baggers" and the bag eventually migrated into satire as the universal siutcase for the destitute.
