Actually, I said it because I think it's absolutely unnecessary. I think some of the best (in my opinion) drummers have played with smaller sets. I've seen way too many crap drummers use 6 rack toms and a double bass pedal as a crutch and think that they're really rockin' when the most complex fill they do are descending runs.

Personally, I used one once and as I opined, completely unnecessary. I can play sixteenth notes with my right foot, up to a certain tempo and for a certain amount of time (which is just a matter of conditioning), anything faster than that I can use the floor tom in conjunction with the bass and still have my left foot free to tap out a rhythm on the high hats.
