Was your teacher on anything when he started talking about the mothman?
Like ArrowX said, the movie is based on a real event. There were 3 prophecies made by the mothman:
I don't remember exact details, but one prophesy (about the pope) never came to pass, the second one did (foretold JFK's assasination), and the third one predicted a nation-wide power outage. Instead, a bridge collapsed.
