I just watched a TLC program about ticks. They did a cheesy reanactment of this kid that was sent to the hospital and they took a needle and shoved it in her spine to check and see if she had some disease because she had paralysis, but it was a tick. The program said that the effects of the north american tick will wear off after taking it out but the one in Australia gets worse when you remove it and lots of people die :
