I'd say Family Guy tries to be The Simpsons! The Simpsons came out before Family Guy (it's one of the longest running cartoons, if not, the longest).
Remember that Family Guy only has about 3 or 4 seasons (it started in something like 1998 - The Simpsons started in 1989), whereas The Simpsons are at their 8th (or so) season!
